Former resident

“My stay at The Bridge could not have come at a better time. It was the opportunity I needed to be surrounded completely by the programme of the 12-Step fellowships and to deepen my understanding of the Steps.”

The resident described enjoying morning meditation and nightly review, which created a strong sense of community and support between residents and staff. Morning swims, the beach and daily meetings with the 12-Step fellowships became an important part of a restorative routine.

Feed the Street was singled out as particularly meaningful: a way to help people in Barbados while practising service to others as part of recovery.

“It was a great experience and one I will definitely repeat. I have been spreading the word to friends in sobriety who might be interested in taking their recovery further.”

Ron · UK

“My name is Ron, and I am an alcoholic. My journey at The Bridge started in my local hospital.”

A family member contacted the Director of The Bridge and explained that I had been admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning. Following a phone call, a member of The Bridge outreach team came directly to the hospital and took me to detox the next morning. I was contacted daily and supported by The Bridge team. After a week in detox, I was collected and escorted to Barbados.

On arrival, I was overwhelmed by the amazing facilities. Having been in treatment a few times, I had my own preconceived ideas. However, The Bridge is very different. For a start, there are only ever three clients and 24/7 one-to-one support.

We studied the recovery process together. Staff and clients attended meetings, and everyone engaged in our group activities. A highlight was cooking and preparing meals for people experiencing homelessness, then going out into the local communities to hand them out. This gave me a true understanding of the word gratitude.

Our outings to Bridgetown and attendance at local fellowship meetings were a real eye-opener. Since leaving, the aftercare has been excellent, and our Zoom meetings have been greatly beneficial.

“My six weeks at The Bridge were life-changing and lifesaving. Thank you to all the staff and my friends in Barbados.”
